The story of the House of Wagner, told by Gottfried Wagner, the disowned great-grandson of the composer. More than 120 years the Wagner family runs the Bayreuth Festival. But Bayreuth - today the center of a Wagner music industry that spans the globe - has a past that is extremely closely connected with the rise of German national socialism and anti-Semitism. Hitler regarded the Wagner family as "his family", had his own "Führer wing" in the Wagner home and wanted to marry Winifred Wagner. Fights over succession and the obligation of having to serve the works of Richard Wagner for a lifetime, also give this family a tragic quality. After 1945, New Bayreuth only half tries to come to terms with its past. Gottfried Wagner was disowned by his father because, as a critical musicologist and stage director, he pointed to the anti-Semitic tradition in the House of Wagner.
