THE MAGIC OF THE NIGHTA film by Petrus van der Let 2012 (45min.) |
|
The ancient polytheistic religions revered deities of the night and of the day. Iranian religious founder Zarathustra declared war on night and darkness more than 3,000 years ago, made light into an absolute and is one of the founding fathers of monotheism. The battle against darkness became almost fanatical with the Gnostic sects, but even St. Augustine thought that night was the time for sinners. During the Middle Ages, Walpurgis Night was used as a pretext for torturing and murdering women, children and non-believers. Not until the Enlightenment was the night once again seen in a more positive light. However, the battle against darkness continues underground to this day. The 24-hour society has practically done away with the night and it is thus not surprising that young artists are rediscovering it for their own purposes.
